cat is eating the fresh cat littler

this is odd. ive heard of cats eating grass for an upset stomach but when i clean the cat box and put in brand new litter, i stood there watching his behavior to see if he would go to the bathroom. he stood there for a minute or 2, and when he decided to come out of the cat box, his tounge was covered with the cat litter, like he was eating it. any comments?
